Project Description

The purpose of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention is to prevent more cases of not getting treatment for hearing loss; however, deaf community members and scholars have argued that the program is not designed to accomplish language development, since it heavily focuses on the medical perspective of hearing loss.

Early intervention programs have become a vital social program for all infants, including the Deaf and Hard of Hearing infants, ensuring developmental and cognitive milestones. Findings will inform policy design and implementaiton of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program using the California’s Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids (LEAD-K) framework to ensure that the program is designed to support language development for Deaf and Hard of Hearing infants.

To ensure that this project meets the requirements of “Honors Option” for the RIT Honors Program, the goals of the Honors Options are to engage in scholarly discosure and dissemination with the RIT community, to enchance my understanding of social policy and inequities, the following project deliverables will be completed to meet the requirements of the Honors Option.
